Segments — targeted audiences

Build reusable audience filters from your Lightspeed Golf customer data — player type, course, tee-time date, tags, and custom fields — then target push and automatic notifications at exactly the right golfers.

Updated 7/27/2026

A segment is a saved audience filter — a reusable definition of "which golfers" that you build once and reuse across push notifications, automatic reminders, and geofenced messages. Instead of blasting every pass holder, you speak to the golfers a message is actually for: left-handers, members of a particular tier, everyone playing the North course this weekend, or customers with a specific custom field on their Lightspeed Golf profile.

You manage segments under Settings → Segments.

Why segments matter

Relevance is what keeps notifications welcome. A left-handed-clubs promo means nothing to right-handers; a members' dinner shouldn't go to one-time visitors. Segments let you:

  • Target promotions to the golfers most likely to act on them.
  • Personalise outreach using the data already sitting in Lightspeed Golf.
  • Reuse an audience — define "VIP members" once, then use it for every VIP message.

What you can filter on

Every segment starts with a base audience, then narrows it with any number of filters (all filters must match):

  • All passes / Tee-time passes / Player passes — the base set.
  • Player type — the tier from Lightspeed Golf (e.g. Member, Visitor, VIP).
  • Course and tee-time date — for tee-time audiences.
  • Tags — customer tags from Lightspeed Golf (has any / has all of the tags you pick).
  • Custom fields — any custom field on the Lightspeed Golf customer profile (see below).
  • Profile fields — member number, bag number, gender, marketing consent, activation state, date of birth, and join date.

As you build, a live count shows how many passes match — and the Apple / Google split — so you always know the reach before you save.

Custom fields from Lightspeed Golf

Lightspeed Golf lets you store custom fields on a customer (for example Handicap Index, Handed, or Favourite food). GolfPass imports these with each customer, so you can target on them directly — "everyone whose Handed is left", or "members with a Handicap Index set".

A few things worth knowing:

  • Custom fields differ from customer to customer. Only the fields that are set on a customer come through, so the list you see is built from the golfers you've already synced.
  • Values are always text. You can match on is (equals), is set, or is not set.
  • Gender is shown as Male / Female; golfers with no gender on file are reached with is not set.

If a custom field you expect isn't in the list yet, its data may not have synced. Your GolfPass contact can refresh customer profiles from Lightspeed Golf, after which new custom fields and tags appear in the builder.

Creating a segment

    1. Go to Settings → Segments and choose New segment.
    2. Give it a clear name — you'll pick it by name later (e.g. "VIP members", "Left-handers").
    3. Pick the base audience (All / Tee-time / Player passes).
    4. Add filters with Add filter. Each filter is a field, an operator, and a value.
    5. Watch the live count to confirm you're reaching the right people.
    6. Create segment.

You can edit or delete a segment any time from the Segments list.

Using a segment

Once saved, a segment appears anywhere you choose an audience:

When you send or save, the segment's current definition is snapshotted onto that message — so editing the segment later never silently changes a message you've already scheduled.

Start broad, then narrow. Build the segment, glance at the live count, and add one filter at a time. If the count drops to zero, your filters are contradicting each other (for example a tee-time-only field on a player-pass base).
